Sickened soccer sucker

By: Martyn | February 3rd, 2010

evil-corporate-santa-returnsIt really is a queer old game. Togo get sprayed with bullets and all the sympathy CAF gives them is a four-year-long turned-back. In that same confederation’s showpiece competition (one that gets stronger by the year), the winners are the world’s 10th best side, triumphed for the third consecutive campaign, yet won’t be making the trip to South Africa this summer. Elsewhere, we haven’t even got the World Cup out of the way and already the game’s organisers see fit to fondle the balls for EURO 2012. And a host of Russian sides, ourselves, Notts County, and Crystal Palace all look set to hit the ‘Eject’ button but defy the doom to start winning with character-bulging showings. So how is our media and its brainwashed public covering these unfortunate incidents; maybe even trying to instigate change? Well, y’know, it can wait until some story about John Terry getting his willy wet blows over.

I can’t speak from either the heart or knowledgeable position about the crises that plague these other sides (although I was amused in a non-schadenfreude-way to hear that Palace took out loans from the bank based on the notion that by now they’d have been in the Premier League, stayed there for one season, suffered relegation the campaign after that, received parachute payments for perceived demotion, before climbing straight back up!), but I can definitely speak from personal experience regarding Ridsdale’s bluster and mismanagements of a football club. Can’t he just leave us be!? Or at least speak with some veracity for a change.

Elsewhere on Planet City, Bothroyd, McCormack, Whittingham, Ledley all remain at the club. Funny that.

This Friday evening, Newcastle United await. After Chopra and Hughton’s outfit exchanged ostentatious licked-lips across the office floor, flirtatious comments over the water cooler, and nights spent procrastinating as to whether he/she really likes the other during The Window (are Microsoft missing a trick by not sponsoring it?), it’s inevitable that our striker’s gonna net past ‘em! And given the team’s newfangled discovery of scoring late goals rather than conceding them, let’s hope his booked-in netter stops their juggernaut rather than all but sealing its spot in next season’s top division.

I don’t really know why any of us care so much about clambering up there. Burnley and Hull seem to hate it now the initiall thrill has worn off. And what with having drawn Chelski in the FA Cup, we’ve nigh-on played every half-decent side up there in alternative competitions during recent seasons (Manchester duo withstanding). One token win against a big-ish team having an off-night aside, our thrill has to some extent already worn off. Tsk: listen to me, bored of our maybe-Premier League maiden season already. Disillusioned enough by the modern game to take for granted being able to think I can take for granted. Football â„¢today may have bitten me on the arse, but I refuse to join its hordes of zombies. So you can take that messrs Scudamore, Cook and Murdoch!
